Your Money Shadow
The Hidden Forces Driving Your Capacity for More
Money Wounds Live in the Body
Your relationship with money is not primarily psychological. It is physiological. It lives in your body. It shows up in the tightening of your chest when you think about asking for a raise, raising your rates, or the subtle anxiety when you open your banking app. Your money wound is very present when you make a large purchase, and feel the knot in your stomach. These reactions are surfacing memories stored in your unconscious mind to keep you safe and tethered to what is familiar. If your experience with money has been mostly stressful, anxiety-inducing, and scarcity-based, then that is your comfort zone. No matter how much you don’t want to feel these negative emotions, they are far safer than the unknown of abundance, gratitude, and peace.
How Scarcity Becomes Identity
Your relationship with money centers on what it feels like to have enough. So ask yourself, did you have enough? Did you feel you were enough? Where was there a lack in your earliest years?
For some, a lack showed up materially through financial instability or unmet physical needs. For others, it showed up as a deficit of attention, affection, or emotional presence. A parent who was physically there but emotionally unavailable, or emotionally present, but who died when you were young. Or perhaps your needs were minimized or a caregiver often delayed in meeting your needs.
Reflect: What moments in your early life did a desire for more, feel like too much?
Children automatically internalize and unconsciously form their identity based on their embodied and consistent external experiences of lack/not-enough/scarcity. This creates psychological cohesion when young, but it blooms into self-mistrust, paralyzing anxiety, and a baseline shame when they are adults.
The Unconscious Recreates What Feels Safe
Your unconscious mind is not trying to create the most abundant life possible. It is trying to recreate what is familiar. Even if that familiarity is rooted in lack. If you survived it once, your system encodes it as safe. So when you move toward expansion, raise your fee, ask for promotion (plus a raise), or make a bold investment, your body signals a threat. Until you do the work to create safety with money, you will always find deepest safety in scarcity and fear.
Why Affirmations Fall Flat
This is why both positive affirmations and prayers fall flat. You can try to consciously assert that you are abundant, but if your body associates money with instability or loss, those words have nowhere to land. Words operate at the level of the conscious mind, while your money patterns are governed by the unconscious mind, stored in your body. Your body does not speak in affirmations. It speaks in sensation, contraction, expansion, and impulse. That lump in your throat, that tightness in your shoulders, that burning in your gut—that is your deepest programing coming online.
Healing Comes Through New Experiences
If your money wounds were created through consistent experience, then they must be healed through new consistent experience. 4 steps are required for real change to take root:
You must identify and release your baggage around money. You’ll likely need a guide here.
You must envision a new way. I don’t just mean a slightly more preferable way. I mean a vision for your future that was previously unimaginable, and likely ridiculous to the people who’ve known until know.
You must take action. Do what you’ve not done before. The best question my money coach asked me was, “What have you not allowed yourself to consider?” You don’t need to work harder, or even smarter. You may need to do something something that makes your butt pucker yet launches you into the person you’re becoming.
You MUST focus. Change doesn’t happen on the mountain top, but in the 99% of life lived in the valley. You need the mountain top to cast your vision, but lasting change happens when you live the “mountain top” every day in the valley.
This is money shadow work. Choosing to charge more when your voice shakes, because you know it’s aligned. Choosing to invest when your body tightens, because you’re divinely supported and taken care of. Choosing to receive without immediately overgiving or justifying your worth. When you take this level of action, you teach your nervous system that something new is now safe and available.
Expansion Feels Unsafe Before It Feels Normal
At first, these choices will not feel empowering. They will feel uncomfortable and exposing because you are stepping outside the identity your body rehearsed and replayed for decades. This is THE threshold. The edge where your past programming collides with the person you get to become. With money and your finances, each time you choose the person you’re becoming over your past programming, you are creating a new normal. It can be painful work, but once abundance, gratitude, and safety with money are installed in your unconscious mind, you literally won’t be able to find your old fear and scarcity.
You’re Ready to Do This, Aren’t You?
At some point, you have to decide if you are going to keep choosing what feels familiar, or step into what is actually aligned. This is the threshold. Money will continue to mirror back your past until you consciously choose to meet it differently.
